Mini Explosion Box & What to Do With Scraps Project #1

I am often asked what I save and what I toss as far as scraps are concerned. It's a great question and really differs upon the individual and what you deem as savable. I am going to start including some projects that tackle just that dilemma-What to do with scraps. Today I wanted to share a simple and quick idea for a cute gift that can utilize scraps. This mini explosion box takes minimal prep and can be decorated with stamps alone, designer paper alone, or a combination of both like I did.

To create the base of the box, start by cutting a piece of card stock to measure 7-1/2" x 7-1/2". I used Old Olive card stock. Make score lines 2-1/2" from the edges so that you create a tic-tac-toe pattern. Go back and score each corner box diagonally. (FYI: A Bone Folder and the guide on the Paper Cutter make this step a snap!)

Next, cut each corner diagonally as seen in the photo below.
Here's where you'll need to decide if you are stamping both the inside and out or stamping one and using Designer Series Paper on the other. Here I stamped the inside using Chocolate Chip ink with images from the Cheep Talk set. The sentiment is from Trendy Trees

Next, fold the corners in either a valley or mountain fold according to which side you want showing on the outside. In the image below the stamped side would be the outside due to the valley folds.

I decided to make the stamped side the inside so I just the refolded the paper accordingly. I then flipped it over to cover each of the squares with retired Designer Series Paper. These were attached with SNAIL Adhesive. Your base is complete now.

For the lid cut a piece of card stock to measure 3-7/8" x 3-7/8". Score at 5/8" on all four sides. I used Chocolate Chip here.

Make a cut at each of the corners up to the score line. (HINT: Make sure you only make ONE cut on each side.) This will allow you to create the lid. Add a piece of Sticky Strip to each flap. Before you remove the tape and assemble the lid create your decorative top.

For the top cut a piece of coordinating card stock to measure 2-1/2" x 2-1/2". I used Old Olive.

For the lid insert I cut a piece of Whisper White card stock to measure 2-1/4" x 2-1/4". I stamped the bird image in Ruby Red ink and the flowers in Summer Sun ink. These are both from the Cheep Talk set. The sentiment, from Trendy Trees, was stamped in Chocolate Chip ink. I inserted it to the Old Olive card stock piece by punching each corner with the Slit punch and tucking the Whisper White piece into the Slit. This was adhered to the top of the lid with SNAIL Adhesive

Assemble the lid and fill a gift bag with candy and voila, you have a fast and easy gift for someone special. Not to mention a few less scraps:)
